Western Greece: Α Blessed land of exquisite beauty
20 03 2011If there is a country that can take pride in its myths, legends, this country could be no other than Greece! From all its geographical regions, Western Greece is possibly the one that marked, diachronically, the cultural unity of the Greek world. It is stretched from the northwest part of the Peloponnese to the western tip of the Greek mainland, covering an area of 11.350 km2, and has almost 700.000 inhabitants. It is one of the most beautiful and untouched regions of Greece, where the sea and the mountain enchant the visitor, as they coexist harmoniously in this blessed land. The deep blue seas of the Patraikos gulf, the rich vegetation of the forest of Foloi, the beautiful sandy beaches of Mytikas, the impetuous Alfios river, the traditional hostels in Kalavryta, the lodges and ski centers in Chelmos, the picturesque ouzo-selling taverns of Katakolo and the taverns with traditional Greek music in Planitero are some of the elements that could enthral the visitor.
Western Greece, basically in terms of geography and administration, includes the prefectures of Aitoloakarnania, Achaia and Ileia. Τhe three prefectures which compose one of the most important sources of the cultural, historical and folklore inheritance of our country have extensive coastal areas along the Ionian Sea and the Gulfs of Ambracia, Patras and Corinth.
Τhe Prefecture of Aitoloakarnania combines tall mountain ranges with many natural and artificial lakes with the Acheloos and Evinos rivers ,which complete the geo-morphology of the prefecture, and form the basic source of its financial activities.
In the region you will find many historical monuments: Τhe ancient Thermo – the Citadel of Aitolia – where you can admire the Sanctuary of Αpοllο (620 BC) with the 4th century walls and the ancient theatre of Stratos. Υou can also see the ancient town of Kalidona, the forum and the Τemple of Artemis dating from the 4th century BC. It is also worth visiting the town of Mesolongi where the famous “Gate of the Exit” exists, which was used by the imprisoned inhabitants for the heroic “Exodos of Mesolongi” in 1826.
Τhe Prefecture of Achaia is also characterised by wide contrasts in its terrain. Τhe economic life of the prefecture, and the Region as a whole, is centred in the port city of Patras, a glorious multicultural centre. Patras is the capital of the prefecture. It owes its name to Patreas, chief of the Achaians. This modern city is a gate towards the West, a commercial channel to and from Italy, Marseille and England.
Achaia was first inhabited during the Palaeolithic Age. After the decline of the Mycenaean centres the Achaians (the region is named Achaia after them) from the Argolid came and settled here after the invasion of the Dorians (1100 BC), founding important cities, such as Aigio and Patra.
Achaia started to play a more dynamic role in 280 BC, when the Achaian Confederacy was created. In 146 BC the area fell to the Romans. It embraced Christianity earlier than the rest of Greece (the Apostle St. Andrew preached in Patras and was martyred there). In 1205 it occupied centre stage with the founding of the Principality of Achaia by the Franks. Before long if passed into the hands of the Palaiologues who ruled the Peloponnese from Mistras. For a short period (1687 – 1715), the area was a Venetian colony.
Achaia was conquered by the Turks in 1460 and it was liberated in 1828. The region played a leading part in the Greek Revolution of 1821 when the flag rose (24 of March 1821) in the Monastery of Agia Lavra, in Kalavryta.
The most important historical parts are: The walls of Dimei near Patra, the ancient Theatre of Eghira near Akrata and the town of Kerinia, almost 15 km from Aigio. The town of Klitoras in the Municipality of Lefkassio and the ancient Dimi. Ιn Kalaνryta, you will discover the unique Caνe of the Lakes, which has 13 scaled lakes in 3 levels, the Monastery of Megalou Spileou and the Monastery of Agia Laνra. In Patras the visitor can admire the ruins of the Medieνal Castle (Fortress of Patra), the church of Agios Andeas and of Pandokratoras, and the Hamam (Turkish bath). It is worthwhile to see the wonderful Castle of Rio, identical to the Castle of Andirrio on the opposite shore. The Rio-Antirrio Bridge which is the longest cable bridge in the world (2.250 m. long) successfully joined Western Greece and was delivered in the 2004 for the Olympic Games.
The Prefecture of Ileia consists mostly of plains, through which flow the rivers Alfeios, Pineios, Erymanthos and their tributaries. The plain of Ileia is the largest in the Peloponnese, but the Prefecture is better known for the coastal wetlands of Kotichi and Kaiafa, a terrain of exceptional natural beauty and ecological wealth. Pirgos is the capital of the prefecture of Ileia. The town owes its name to the presence of a tall tower (pirgos) erected by Ioannis Tsernotas (1512 – 1520). It was known by this name as early as 1687.
It was first inhabited during the ancient times (Palaeolithic Age) by the Pelasgians, the Leleghes, the Arcadians, the Achaians and the Dorians. The town of I1eia turned out to be one of its most important centers, which flourished mainly during 1210 BC. According to Pausanias, Aethlios was the first king of the region; he was succeeded by his son Endymion. After Epeios’(Endymion’s son) death, Eleios inherited the throne and the name of the district was then changed to Eleia and the inhabitants Eleians. That is what they have been called ever since.
Ιn this blessed land, we find the ancient Ilida, the town that organised the Olympic Games where the athletes trained before taking part in the games, as well as the ancient Oleni. In the ancient Vasses, you can admire the Temple of Αροllο Epicure (420 – 400 BC) a work of Iktinos. One of the biggest pan – Hellenic sanctuaries is the Ancient Olympia with the worth visiting statue of Hermes by Praxitelis.
